Only recently have we started to let the girls free range and so far so good. They don t seem like obvious ideal roomies but we know for a fact that the feline and the poultry can become great friends in the same backyard. Chickens can encounter three types of cats.

You may want to consider getting 2 barn cats and not just one. If we get them how do we keep them from killing our chickens. This will depend on the size of the birds and the cats if the birds are peeps more than likely yes but if you intend on feeding the poor barn cats no since their would be no reason for the cats to kill your birds for a meal if fed every day a good food plus cats are not dumb if the birds are bigger they will peck a cat if get to close and a cat knows this i have 4 cats they live with the birds.
I have 4 barn cats and they don t bother the chickens. We have a resident rat snake in our barn but he rarely is seen and not at all in the winter. We have decided to get two barn kittens and hopefully there will be no problems with the cats and chickens later on.

Joined feb 23 2008 113 posts. Getting cats and chickens to get along is through the same method as most other domesticated animals. But this was my husband s idea let them be chickens and i am still worried about these cats especially when it gets to be winter and they get hungrier.
